Nakameguro, along the Meguro-gawa.

The Meguro River’s cherry corridor is famous for one week in April — and quietly the best shaded walk in southwest Tokyo the other fifty-one. Three picks on the canal.

By

The somei-yoshino planted along the Meguro-gawa for spring viewing spend the summer doing their real work: a closed canopy over both banks of the canal, four kilometers of it, with the boutique-and-coffee economy tucked under the branches. In July the river walk runs visibly cooler than Yamate-dōri a block uphill.

These picks run the canal’s best stretch, the Saigoyama slope park above it, and the connector to Daikanyama’s zelkova plaza.
