North Beach, alley to alley.

The Italian quarter’s named alleys — Jack Kerouac, Via Ferlinghetti — cut the blocks into shaded shortcuts. Three picks between Washington Square and the Barbary Coast.

By

North Beach kept its alley network when the fire rebuilt everything else: Jack Kerouac Alley between City Lights and Vesuvio, Via Ferlinghetti, Fresno Alley’s mural walls. The four-story Italianate blocks shade them most of the day, and Washington Square’s poplars handle the open middle.

These picks run the literary alleys, the square, and the Telegraph Hill approach where the garden stairs take over from the grid.
