Osaka, down the shōtengai.

Shinsaibashi-suji is 600 meters of fully roofed shopping street, and it connects to a covered network that runs for kilometers. Three picks in Japan’s arcade capital.

By

Osaka is Japan’s shōtengai capital — the covered market street perfected. Shinsaibashi-suji’s glass roof runs 600 meters from the station to Dōtonbori; Tenjinbashi-suji, north of the center, is the longest in Japan at 2.6 kilometers. In August humidity these arcades are the pedestrian arteries; the sunlit avenues are for taxis.

These picks run the flagship arcade, the river relief valve at Nakanoshima, and the Dōtonbori canal walk that lights up at dusk.
