The Third Ward, warehouse-cool.

Milwaukee’s warehouse district keeps its cream-brick shade line, and the Riverwalk threads the buildings at water level. Three picks for the lake-cooled city.

By

Milwaukee has a structural advantage: Lake Michigan holds the east side 5 to 10 degrees cooler than inland on hot afternoons, and the lake breeze funnels up the Milwaukee River through downtown. The Third Ward’s six-story cream-brick warehouses add the shadow; the Riverwalk’s lower level rides at water temperature.

These picks run the ward, the river, and the bluff parks. The Public Market is the air-conditioned anchor when the breeze fails.
