Brisbane, under the figs.

The City Botanic Gardens’ Moreton Bay figs are 150 years old and each one shades half a block. Three picks threading the CBD’s subtropical canopy.

By

Brisbane’s founding-era Moreton Bay figs have canopies 40 meters across — single trees that shade entire intersections. The City Botanic Gardens holds the densest cluster, and the riverside boardwalk under the cliff at Kangaroo Point extends the cool line east. Queensland summer humidity makes shade non-negotiable; the figs are civic infrastructure.

These picks run the gardens, the river edge, and the arcade network the CBD threaded between them.
